Hi guys,
I'm new to ubuntu,I just installed MATE 16.04.I have issues with my wireless adapters.
Firstly I tried to get my NETGEAR WNA1000M to work and tried a lot of solutions posted throughout most of the forums,
It did not work and then I tried my friend's adapter,MEDIATEK 802.11n which is supposed to be supported but is also not working.
The connections always display Realtek or Mediatek based on the adapter but looks like it is disabled,I haveb een trying for a whole day to get a fix.
I'm afraid I messed up the etc folder with the tons of solutions I tried out,The information for the NETGEAR adapter is
RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v4.0.2_9000.20130911 I.
Thanks in advance,

Hey, I just installed Ubuntu 16.04 on my dad's old Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop, as a way of getting it up and running again. I myself use Ubuntu on my own machine, but am not all that technically skilled.

So my dad is 100% new to Ubuntu, has never used any Linux distro before. When I installed 16.04, the machine was able to connect to the inteet via etheet, and under the DRIVERS section in settings, we were able to locate the proprietary drivers needed to connect to wifi. Well, after installing the driver and rebooting his machine, we were still not able to access the web via wifi - but now, even the etheet connection wasn't working!

I'm hoping someone would be able to help me out here. My dad was really psyched to be able to get his old computer up and running again (with a much better OS than the Windows Vista that had previously been installed on the HDD), but we've run into this snag. I'm fairly new to Ubuntu as well so unfortunately I wasn't much help.

Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated!

I need help finding the right program to use for sketching electronic schematics and doing analog circuit simulations. So far I've mostly used LTSpice through WINE, although recently I've been trying a web-based program called EasyEDA. I'm still more comfortable with LTSpice. I also tried (but did not like) Oregano, and gschem (gEDA Schematic. I use Fritzing for PCB making, but it doesn't have circuit simulation.
I honestly don't want anything with a big leaing curve, but something intuitive relatively "plug-and-play". I'll share my experience with these programs so far. I don't want to have to lea too much that doesn't have to do with the electronic circuit itself.

LTSpice is alright but it has stupidly weird keyboard shortcuts, and it has no obvious way to scroll around the schematic. What I like that has kept me using it is that doing simulations on it is rather painless. It's more difficult than it should be to find documentation on stuff as simple as "How do I enter the capacitance value in microfarads?".

EasyEDA is a little less simple to get a simulation running. The first time I tried the simulation it failed because some capacitor which appeared to be connected wasn't actually connected. Unfortunately, the simulation didn't appear as accurate as LTSpice. It also has a strange time limit for transient analysis. However, the AC analysis (frequency response graph) was more plug-and-play than I expected.
I like it that it gives default values to components right when they're placed (so it won't tell me "No value of resistor 4" and I won't struggle to figure out how to set it. I also like it that when a component is connected, it will move the wire if I drag the component.
I would prefer to have a program installed locally on my computer.

Oregano was awfully buggy, and not so intuitive to navigate. I had to remake a schematic because the file of the old one got bugged-up. It doesn't even have documentation. Forget it!

Gschem was actually the first that I ever tried, but I have occasionally looked back at it. But it's not a particularly smooth GUI, and setting the value of a resistor is not slightly straight-forward. I couldn't manage to ever get the circuit simulation to work.

Here are my requirements for the program that I want;

  • Easy to do a simulation with minimal set-up after making the circuit. Not too likely to say "simulation failed" for some stupid bug-related reason.
  • Doesn't have stupid bugs to get in the way of the process and make the simulation fail, or give me headaches.
  • Keyboard shortcuts that aren't terribly weird. Ctrl+Z should be undo by default. It would be nice to also have shortcuts for drawing wires, rotating/inverting parts, and placing basic parts such as resistors. Middle-click or right-click to scroll around.
  • A GUI that isn't painful to navigate.
  • Setting basic values of parts (such as resistance of a resistor, capacitance of a capacitor, maybe even voltage drop of a diode) should be straightforward.
  • Parts that default to realistic behaviour, rather than ideal behaviour. One exception to this is voltage source, which I prefer ideal behaviour. I don't mind if it has both (labeled) ideal & realistic varieties of parts such as op-amps.
  • It should have documentation.

I like making bass/guitar effects circuits (pedals) as a hobby. This is much of what I'm interested in doing. I like to see exactly what a circuit would do to a waveform.

Thank you to anyone willing to help me.

I have installed Ubuntu 16.04 (Unity 7) on my Intel laptop and most everything works, but the computer runs a little hot.

I set my power controls to Suspend when the lid is closed (whether or not it is plugged in), but it never does. I find the fan running and the system running warm.

I can get Suspend working when I use the menu (cog in the right of the top panel).

Anybody know how I can get it to Suspend when I close the lid?

I'm not sure what information would be helpful so if you let me know I'll run the command and post the output.

Thanks.

I have been waiting to use Firefox 47.0.1 in an Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS VM, but the Software Updater keeps assuring me that the 47.0 I have is up to date.

I know that 47.0.1 was released on 06/28/2016. How long does it usually take for new updates to make it into Software Updater?

I'm aware I an download and install the latest directly from Mozilla, but I wonder what will happen to future updates if I do that.

Thanks
